Here’s Why Australia Needs to Focus More on Recycling

Did you know that Australia is one of the largest producers of waste? Closely following United States, Australia in fact produces more waste per person than any other country. On average, each Australian generates around 2.1 tonnes of waste during their lifetime bringing the national total to 48 million tonnes of waste each year.  Considering the small population of Australia, it’s clear that a solution to this problem is necessary.

The benefits of recycling

Recycling is the process of collecting, sorting and using waste to make new materials. Products that use recycled materials use less resources such as energy and water compared to using new materials.

How recycling works

The process of recycling includes a number of steps. These  include collection and processing, manufacturing, and buying the recycled materials, let’s take a closer look at each of these.

Collection and Processing

There are several ways to collect materials suitable for recycling. For example, curbside collections, drop off points, and deposit or refund programs. Once these materials are collected, they will be sent to a recovery facility to be sorted, cleaned and processed into recycled materials that can be used for manufacturing new products. These new recycled materials are then sold just like new materials at times at a reduced price. Prices of the new recycled materials vary depending on the market worldwide.

Manufacturing

Many products today contain recycled materials. Some of the most common include household items such as newspapers and paper towels, plates and glasses, in canned goods, laundry detergent bottles and a lot more. Other new uses of recycled material include road asphalt, garden pot plants, chairs and park benches. New uses for affordable recycled materials are being researched and discovered daily.

Buying recycled materials

The recycling process comes to a closed loop when you purchase new products made from recycled contents. There are a lot of products that contains recycled materials. If you would like to join the green revolution, you should not only recycle, but also look for products that contain the recycle logo.

Awareness, information, and knowledge on knowing how to recycle and how the recycling process works will substantially benefit in this country’s growing problem with waste.  People need to know what materials to use and buy. Additionally, education on where to put recyclable materials for collection, processing, and manufacturing will create a cleaner and brighter future for our next generation.
